A Time to Wean
Katherine A. Dettwyler, PhD Department of Anthropology Texas A & M University College Station Texas from Breastfeeding Abstracts, August 1994, Volume 14, Number 1, pp. 3-4.
In the United States, women receive conflicting advice about when to wean their children completely from breastfeeding. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends one year, while WHO and UNICEF recommend at least two years. Many physicians consider six months to be "extended" breastfeeding, and some health professionals question the motives of women who nurse for more than a year. In turn, women may hide the fact that they are still nursing an older child from disapproving health care professionals or family members. From anthropological research, we know that in many non-Western cultures children are routinely nursed for three to four years. Are they eccentric, or are we? Can we look to other animals to determine what the natural age at weaning would be in modern humans if it was not modified by cultural beliefs? read more

The Twelve to Twenty-Two Month Old: A Traditional Perspective
I read a very interesting blog that gives much to the parenting world. With the authors permission I will be now and them posting some of her interesting posts here and this is one of them. However, you can go and visit The Parenting Passageway whenever you wish. I hope you do enjoy this post and find it as interesting as I did!
There are several posts under the “Baby and Toddler” header that deals with toddler behavior and how to best live peacefully with a baby ages birth through three, but I thought I would highlight some traditional viewpoints of these ages again. (And whilst we have a traditional developmental perspective and realistic expectations for ages twelve months through age nine on this blog now, I still have the birth through twelve months to go! Whew!) We are also going to circle around to loving guidance for the baby through age two in several posts in the next several weeks or so. read more |
Weathering The Picky Eater Stage
The other day, I made lunch for myself and my two kids. Chicken sandwiches on wheat bread all around, apple sauce for them and a pickle for me. I was putting dirty utensils into the sink when I turned around to see that my 5 year old son had snatched the pickle off my plate, taken a bite, handed it to his sister, who also took a bite and handed it back to him. When he looked up and saw me watching him, he said, “I like it! I like pickles!” He took another bite, then placed what was left back on my plate. read more

Current Review
Cam booster seat- its a great addition to the house and better than a high chair. This booster seat, is foldable and is therefore very easy to carry around with you (especially if you are going to eat out but don't fancy a restaurant's highchair like me!). It has three height positions to adjust according to your childs' need and it also comes with its own removable tray.
